I can see they added lightness by eliminating the engine.

I doubt you will find disc brakes on any road bike, especially high end racing types. There's not a lot of braking and they would just at weight.

I would hate to go ride it one day and find out that I'd been replaced and told to come back the next day with more sponsors.

They definitely exist on road bikes, I've scene a single speed with them even, stock, but not sure about higher end light weight bikes, kinda makes sense for weight they wouldnt

they put them on cyclocross bikes and commuter bikes where you might encounter water on the rim.

I've got a road bike with discs but they've been classified as "city bikes" now since, yeah, gram-conscious fellows in polka dot jerseys wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole.

For a few moments there, bikes had comfortably pulled away from the "ALL SERIOUS BIKES MUST HAVE DROP BARS, SKINNY WHEELS AND BE SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT."

...aaaand they're back.

That also makes sense, lol. I don't think mine needs them, pretty easy for me to lock up the tires even with fork brakes

try riding a bike with steel wheels. Holy shit, talk about not being able to stop.

Sounds like it'd make for a heavy bike too, which doesnt help in the stopping department. My bike weights a smidge under 20 lbs, so pretty easy to stop :)

oh wow! Mine is around 27. after I got rid of the steel wheels. also having good calipers helps. I have old centerpulls. they suck.

Mine's fully stock, the beauty of single speeds ;) haha. One of my friends is about to get a Specialized Fat bike (the snow bikes that magically weigh nothing compared to how big their tires are) and I am jealous D:

Mine is just really old (1981). Those fat bikes are lighter than they seem because of the wheels. Have you looked at them? Usually there are cutouts in the center. They are good for sand too. I want one so bad. I tried snow biking with my mtb last winter, and those things just passed me left and right. Deeps snow sucks with 2.1" tires.

Yeah, they have cut outs, sept for the cheap Mongoose ones..which weigh over 50 pounds because of it, lol.
